The Diocese of Trenton is grateful to God and those who sought to inform their consciences and vote for the results of yesterday's election. We made a stand to protect human life at its most vulnerable stage, and people responded to our efforts.
We were told that embryonic stem cell research might be able to help those who suffer with illness. However, it is not enough to want to help people if that means destroying others. We can not ease the pain of some of God's children by inflicting it on the innocent. The idea of technology at all costs and the elevation of science over the good of humanity only diminishes the value of human life. We should always recall that just because we can do something, does not mean we should do it. Yesterday we demonstrated that we have learned these lessons.
We must continue to fight compassionately and convincingly for the dignity of life at every stage and not simply rest on this victory. We will continue to strongly support adult stem cell research which has already done much good without exacting any harm to life. We realize that we can be both people of faith and citizens of this great country and State of New Jersey, and for this we thank God!
